NEWS
During SEP Week (Oct. 1st-5th), we will not be having individual appointments for kindergarten because of our assessments in August.  However, if you have concerns and you want to meet with me, I would love to do that.  Please just let me know.  Remember that the students will be dismissed early, allowing me to more effectively plan and prepare our curriculum to meet the needs of your children.  AM students will meet from 8:50-10:50 and PM students will meet from 12:30-2:30 even on Wednesday for this week.

Also during SEP Week, the PTA is doing the Book Fair.  The hours are from 2:30-5:00 Monday through Thursday in the gym.  You can also order on line at scholastic.com/fair.

Your support is greatly appreciated in the quality of your child’s education!  Enjoy your week!!

Please reinforce having your child write his/her name the “kindergarten way”—beginning with a capital and all the rest  of the letters written in lower case.  THANK YOU!

NEWS
Your child’s DIBELS (an assessment of early literacy skills) scores will come home in his/her homework folder on Monday.  If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail or call me.   I would be happy to discuss them in further detail with you.

Also coming home in your child’s homework folder is a PTA school shirt order form. The cost is $8.00 and the students are encouraged to wear them on Fridays to promote school spirit.

The Take-Home Library (provided through the literacy center) aide works Mondays through Thursdays which means that your child does not bring home a book on Fridays.  I am trying to find a volunteer to come in on Fridays so that the students are able to bring a book home every day.  If you would be willing to volunteer, please let me know.  The reading aide will train you how to do this. If you can devote about 20 minutes on Fridays for this, it would be greatly appreciated!

NEWS
The Kindergarten Assessment results will come home in your child’s homework folder on Monday.  Remember this was given the day you brought your child to meet with me before school began and does not show the growth that has been made in the last few weeks.  It is exciting to see how much each child has learned and has contributed to our class!  However, the DIBELS (an assessment of early literacy skills) scores will not be included because our reading aides are learning a new program to administer the assessment on ipads.  I will send the results as soon as they are complete.  Thank you for your understanding.

We have learned the following sight words:  me, see, I, can.  We have also diligently practiced writing our first names--please remind your child to begin with a capital letter and then use lower case letters to complete their names.  They have practiced recognizing, writing and drawing something that begins with the letters Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd as well as a poem for each letter.  Numerals 0-10 have been an important topic as well.

The PTA will be selling school T-shirts to promote school spirit.  The cost is $8.00 and the students are encouraged to wear them on Fridays. Also, please remember to tell grandparents, friends and neighbors about the Smiths rewards program for schools so we can earn money for South Elementary.

Again, thank you for your support!  Enjoy your week!!

NEWS
What a wonderful group of students we have in our classes!  We are getting into the routine of school and adjusting to a schedule.  Thank you for your encouragement and support from home.  It makes such a difference in your child’s success at school!
It has been exciting to see the growth of each child already!  We will spend two days on each letter of the alphabet.  The first day we focus on the letter, its sound and how to write it correctly.  We are making an alphabet book that will come home at the completion of our letter study.  The second day we learn a poem to put in our “Poetry Binders” and them draw an object beginning with that letter/sound in our “I Can Draw It” books.
We have also been working on the numerals 1-5 and learning the sight words: me, see, I.  Social skills and the importance of always doing our best is also emphasized.
Our first book order will come home on Monday, Sept. 10 in the homework folders.  If you are interested in ordering books, please send the money and the completed order forms back to school on Monday, Sept. 17th.  Please send one check made out to Scholastic Books   They do not accept cash.
Kindergarten is such an exciting year for learning!  I will send the Kindergarten Assessment results and the DIBELS (an assessment of early literacy skills) with your child on Monday, Sept. 17th.  Our reading aides will assess the students on DIBELS next week.
It has been a pleasure to get to know you and your child!!  Please feel free to call, e-mail, or write me a note with any questions or concerns.  Have a great week!!
