         What an exciting time of year!  The students love telling about Christmas traditions, Santa, elves and wish lists.  We will continue to make learning a top priority amongst all the fun things happening.  I sure appreciate all you are doing at home too!

         Don’t forget to check the Lost and Found if your child is missing a coat, jacket, or anything else.  It is located in the small room by the lunchroom.  Any items left at the school will be taken to charity after December 20^th.

Early Literacy Idea

Give opportunities for your child to explore writing by providing a variety of writing materials:  pencils, papers, crayons, markers, chalk, etc.

Remember our reading goal is 15 minutes a night/five night a week.  Please read to your child and have him/her read to you!  This is so important!  Thanks for all you do!

         Hello and happy December!  Your child should be able to read the following sight words:  me, see, I, can, like, look, here, go, the, run, up, this, is, to, do.  We are reading “big books” together and it will be exciting to have them reading in their own books from our CKLA language arts books.  Please continue to have them read to you and you read to them at home.  It makes such a difference!

         In math we have been comparing items and understanding terms like same, more, fewer, greater than, less than and equal to. 

         The Lost and Found is accumulating quite a few items.  If your child is missing a coat, jacket, or anything else, please check the Lost and Found which is located in the small room by the lunchroom.  Any items left at the school will be taken to charity after December 20^th.

Early Literacy Idea

Give your child many opportunities to discuss and tell stories.

Remember our reading goal is 15 minutes a night/five night a week.  Please read to your child and have him/her read to you!  This is so important!  Thanks for all you do!

 

News

         We have such a great group of students and each child is progressing and contributing to our class.  Thank you for your support at home. 

         In Language Arts, the students are recognizing, isolating, and writing spellings for short vowel sounds and consonant sounds.  They can distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of the letters that differ.  For example, peg, pig, pin, pen.

         In math, we are learning about how to make ten when adding on from any given number by using objects or drawings.  We are also learning how to “compose” a number by using two sets to make that number.  For example, seeing ten cubes as eight red and two blue will prepare students for thinking about 8 + 2 = 10.

Early Literacy Idea

Talk with your child about everyday happenings.  Ask open-ended questions that require more than a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer.  Ask ‘what if’ questions.

         Happy early Thanksgiving and thanks again for sharing your wonderful children with me.  We have a super group and each child is progressing and contributing to our class.  Thank you for your dedication to helping your child be successful in school!

         Please continue to ask your child often to tell you the sounds each letter makes as well as the beginning sounds of words.  They are also doing well segmenting sounds and then blending those sounds together to make words.

Have your child retell important parts of the story.  Ask them what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story.

News

         The students are becoming great readers and writers!  We will continue to segment and blend sounds together to make words.  We have covered the following sounds:  a, i, o, c, g, n, h, f, m, d, t, s, v.

         We are learning a lot about the numerals 0-9.  We practice writing each number with symbols and words.  For example, each student can say, “I can write from 0 to 9.  I can write the number 9 and the word nine.” They are also able to identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group.

         As it starts getting colder, please make sure your child’s name is on his/her coat or jacket so we don’t loose them.

         Thank you for your continued support at home!  It is great that the homework and reading books come back consistently.  You are wonderful parents and it makes such a difference in your child’s educational experience. It is exciting to see the progress your children are making. 

         We added the word “up” as one of our sight words this week.  The students should also know the sounds for i, a, o, m, n, t, d, c, g, s, h and understand that we can put those sounds together to form words.

         In math, we are focusing on the numerals 8 and 9. The students can count and write with words and numbers.  They are also identifying whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group.

         It is exciting to see the students blending sounds together to form words.  They are understanding that a relationship exits between written letters and spoken sounds as well.

         We have learned the following sight words:  me, see, I, can, like, look, here, the, go.

         In math we are continuing to learn about a ten frame and that the top part is to be counted as the first five and then add on from there to make larger numerals. 

         We are excited for our Halloween party.  Thank you so much to our wonderful parent volunteers for doing it!  You are greatly appreciated!
