Early Literacy Idea

When reading familiar stories to your child, try stopping once in a while and let him/her tell you what comes next in the story.  This is a fun way to help with comprehension skills.

News

         This is a short week because of the Thanksgiving holiday.  We will continue to do Thanksgiving activities along with our other academic skills on Monday and Tuesday but we will not have Centers because of the short week. School will not be held on Wednesday-Friday.  Enjoy your time together as families!  We will learn more about Native Americans and pilgrims and what life was like in early America.  Thank you again for those who volunteered to furnish items for our Thanksgiving party.  You can send them anytime before Tuesday, Nov. 25^th.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!

         Hooray, we finished up the alphabet last week!  Your child should be able to recognize each letter, tell what sound each one makes and write each letter correctly.  We have been working hard on our sight words—me, see, I, can, like, look, here, the, go, up, this, to, is.  Please ask your child to read each of these words to you!

Early Literacy Idea

Help your child understand how books work.  As you read, point to words to show left to right, spaces in between words, and word patterns. 

 

News

         Thank you for your continued support at home.  It is great that the homework and reading books come back consistently!  You are wonderful parents!  It is exciting to see the progress your children are making!

         The students are becoming great readers and writers!  We will finish up the letters and sounds this week.  We have worked on the following sight words:  me, see, I, can, like, look, here, the, go, up.  We will continue to learn a poem for each of the letters A-Z and our sight words.  They are a lot of fun and help with memorization skills. 

         We will have Centers this week, but because we are out Wednesday through Friday of the following week for the Thanksgiving holiday, we will not have them during the week of Nov. 24^th. 

         If you signed up to furnish something for our Thanksgiving party, I have attached a reminder in your child’s homework folder.  You can send them anytime before Tuesday, Nov. 25^th.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Early Literacy Idea

Play “I Spy” using initial sound clues.  For example, “I spy something that is green and starts with the sound /g/.  (grass)

        I hope you are enjoying the beautiful autumn weather!  We are learning about many things in kindergarten and your children are progressing beautifully!

        Please continue to ask your child often to tell you what sound each letter makes.  We will finish up the letters and sounds of each of the alphabet soon.  This is a great accomplishment for these little ones.  Thank you for your help at home.

        We just finished our chapter 3 test in our Go Math program and the kids are grasping the important concepts of one to one correspondence, forming the numbers correctly and understanding “greater and fewer”.

Early Literacy Idea

Play with letters!  Magnetic letters are good for word play.  Also, let your child trace letters in sand, salt, rice, etc. as they say the letters and sounds.

        Your children are wonderful!  Thank you for your support at home and for making your child’s education a priority! 

        We are excited to start Centers this week and appreciate those who will be coming into our classroom to help!  It is valuable to have the students working in small groups and receive more individualized instruction and that would not be possible without your help!  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

        We will continue to work hard and have fun learning more about letters, sounds, numbers, sight words, reading, writing and lots of other wonderful things!  We will also continue to emphasize social skills and treating others as we want to be treated.

Early Literacy Idea

Have fun with rhyming words!  Think of a word and see how many words your child can think of that rhymes with that word.  (bug, mug, jug, slug, dug, hug, etc.)

News

        We are becoming great writers in Kindergarten!  Please continue to have your child write at home.  Remember not to worry if every word is not spelled correctly!  They are learning to write the sounds they know in each word and we do not want to inhibit their creativity as writers.  The correct spellings will come as they continue to progress.

        The students are learning vital skills in the GoMath program and should be able to form each number 0-10 correctly.  Please encourage your child to show you how they can do this!

PRACTICE THE LIST OF SIGHT WORDS THAT WERE SENT HOME A FEW WEEKS AGO!

News

        The PTA has finalized their plans for Red Ribbon Week.  This will take place on Thursday, Oct. 23 and Friday, Oct. 24.  Friday has been designated as “Crazy Hair” day and your child may also wear a red shirt or a school shirt on that day to help celebrate.  Our PTA is awesome and we appreciate those of you who assist with the many activities that are sponsored by the PTA!

       

       It is wonderful to see the progress each student is making.  You are amazing parents and your support and help at home makes a huge difference!

Early Literacy Idea

Remember our reading goal is 15 minutes a night/five nights a week.  Please read to your child and have him/her read to you!  This is so important!  Thanks for all you do!

News

        We have been doing lots of writing activities in our classroom.  The more students write, the better writers they become.  Research shows that kids who are good writers are usually good readers.  Encourage your child to write grocery lists, make cards, write stories, etc.  Have them “stretch out” words by listening for the sounds they hear in each word and writing those sounds.  Don’t worry that your child does not spell each word correctly—encourage them to (1) say the word they want to write slowly, (2) stretch out the word, (3) listen for each sound, (4) write down the sounds they know and (5) try their best.

         We will have a classroom party on Halloween day and if you signed up to help, thank you so very much!  You will be contacted in the next few days with the details. Please do not have your child wear a costume to school on that day. 

It is such a distraction and the kids have a difficult time focusing on academics when they are in their costumes.  Thank you for your understanding!
