NEWS

We are so excited to present our program on Wednesday! Please have your child wear church clothes for our performances, which will be held in the school gym at 10:00 AM for morning students and 12:30 PM for afternoon students.

There are a few students who still need to return library books.  Mrs. Stucki, the librarian has printed a list of those students.  If your child comes home with that list, please return the books or the replacement money if the books are lost.  Thank you for your cooperation with this. 

The last day of school is Friday, May 24^th.  All students get to meet their first grade teacher for next year on this day.  In order for this to happen, we need all students to attend the morning session of kindergarten (including those who normally attend the PM class).  We will meet from 8:50-10:50 for that day.  Extended day kindergarten will not be held on the last day of school.

Thanks again for all you do!  I have enjoyed your children so much and appreciate your support throughout the year!  Have a wonderful relaxing summer!

This will be our last week of centers.  THANK YOU SO MUCH TO THOSE WHO HAVE HELPED SO FAITHFULLY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR! 

For those who are making pledges for the walk-a-thon, each kindergarten student walked five laps.  You can send the pledge sheet with the money attached with your child and I will turn it into the office. THANKS for your donations!

I continue to enjoy your beautiful children!  Thank you for all you do to make their learning successful!  I am finishing up the end-of-year assessments and will send your child’s results home sometime next week.  Please watch for these.  It is exciting to see their growth!

Early Literacy Idea

Continue to practice comprehension skills with your children.  This is a very vital part of their literacy skills.  Have your child retell the important parts of the story.  Ask them what happened in the beginning, middle and ending of the story.

If your child will not be attending South Elementary next year and you have not contacted Mrs. Smith, our secretary, please do so as soon as possible. The new class lists for next year are being compiled and we need an accurate count.  Thank you!

Early Literacy Idea

Ask your children open-ended questions about a book you have read to them.  Questions that require more than just a “yes” or “no” response help them to think more deeply.  Use “What if” or “Why do you think” questions also.

The 9^th annual “Kite Flight for Reading and Sight” Kite Festival will be held this Saturday from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM.  You are welcome to stay as long as you want and participate in the activities or if you do not have time to stay, please just have your child turn in his/her reading calendars for a prize!  They can choose a kite, book, or movie ticket. This also helps us earn money for our school—the more charts turned in, the more $$ our school receives!  THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN THIS!

Make up clapping games using rhymes that repeat a specific word family:  Miss Mary Mack, All dressed in black, had silver buttons all down her back.  She took her lunch from a paper sack, but saw a bug and gave it a whack!

Our Kindergarten Assessments will take place on Friday, May 3^rd- Tuesday, May 7^th.  DIBELS and Benchmarking for reading levels will also take place the first part of May. It is exciting to see the great progress taking place with each one of your children!

The reading celebration is scheduled for Monday, May 20^th.  As a school, we need to read 1,000,000 minutes in order to earn our way to the celebration.  If the students read 1,5000,000 minutes, Mr. Oldroyd has agreed to kiss a pig! Please keep track of the minutes on our own classroom-reading calendar and on the Kite Flight for Reading and Sight calendar.  Remember our goal for kindergarten is a minimum of 15 minutes a night for five nights a week.  (300 minutes a month).  Please continue to read with your child and have him/her read to you.  It makes a huge difference!
