Literacy Ideas

^·                Find a variety of interesting books to read with your child.

         Kindergarten is an awesome place to be!  We have covered the letters A-J so far in class.  Your child should be able to write both upper and lower case letters correctly and tell you what sound each letter makes.  We have a handwriting book, an “I Can Draw It” book, an alphabet book and a poetry binder that we use to help reinforce each letter name and sound. 

         

       We have also been working in our “GOMATH!” books and are learning about numerals 0-5, matching, cardinality, pairs, larger, fewer, and more.

        

       Remember during SEP Week, we will not be having appointments for kindergarten students because of our individual assessments in August. However, if you have any concerns and would like to meet together, I would love to do that.  Please just let me know. Students will be dismissed every day at 10:50 for the AM students and 2:30 for the PM students even on Wednesday for that week.  PM students attend from 12:30-2:30, not the usual 11:30-1:30.  Extended Day students will stay until 2:30 as well.

Please reinforce having your child write his/her name the “kindergarten way”—beginning with a capital and all the rest lower case!  THANK YOU!

         The Take-Home Library (provided through the literacy center) aide works Mondays through Thursdays, which means that your child will not bring home a “book in the bag” on Fridays. Thank you for being diligent and reading with your child!  It makes a big difference in their success at school!

Thank you to all of you who signed up to help with Centers.  I will let you know when we will begin, but we are shooting for the first part of October.

         Kindergarten is a great place to be!  Your children are doing well and we are making progress in every area of the curriculum.  I appreciate your support at home.  By the end of this week, your child should be able to write, recognize and know the sounds of each letter A through H.

Early Literacy Idea

Play with letters!  Magnetic letters are good for word play.  Also, let your child trace letters in sand, salt, rice, etc.  as they say both the letter name and sounds.

         We have worked hard on focusing on rules and procedures in our classroom. The students are coming along nicely and settling into our routine.  Thank you for your support at home!  I am a firm believer that effective classroom management allows for optimal learning to occur and parent/teacher communication is vital!  Please feel free to call, e-mail or come into the classroom with any questions or concerns.

        We have learned about the letters Aa, Bb and Cc this week.  The students should be able to write the capital and lower case letters correctly as well as tell you the sounds they make.  We have also learned a poem for these three letters and have drawn pictures of an object that begins with each letter in our “I Can Draw It” books.  They are quite the artists!  The sight words we have learned are: me, see.  We also began working in our “GoMath” math books.

Save your Box Tops!

Please remember to send in box tops with your child.  Each box top is worth 10 cents for our school, so please tell your relatives and friends to help with the collecting too!  It is a great way to earn money for our school.  THANKS!!

         We have had a great first week of school!  Thank you for sharing your children with me!  Each one has a special place in my heart already!  I love being with them each day and seeing them learn and grow!

         We have worked hard on establishing a routine and effective classroom management skills so optimal learning will occur with each child.  Let me explain how our classroom management works.  If a student is disrupting the rest of the class, he/she gets a clothespin on the green stoplight. This is just a reminder.  If he/she needs two reminders, the clothespin is moved to yellow and five minutes of recess is missed.  If three reminders are needed, he/she sits on the “thinking chair” away from the other children.  After a few minutes, I visit with him/her and ask if they are ready to join the class again.  If there is still a problem, he/she will visit with Mr. Oldroyd and it will be determined if the Skills Building Program is needed.  Your child will bring home a paper for you to sign if he/she was on the red stoplight that day.  I will also contact you so we can further discuss how we can work together to improve the behavior.  Thank you for your support!
